The Kite Runner was an unexpected bestseller from a then virtually unknown, Khalid Hosseini when it first came out in 2004. It was a very surreal and engaging story of struggle, obstacles and triumph against a backdrop of political turmoil. Hosseini had impeccable timing because the book came out in the aftermath of America’s invasion of Afghanistan, thereby guaranteeing him a slot in the bestseller’s list, and managed to stay on top of the list for two years. But this should not take away from Hosseini the credit that he truly deserves for the heart-wrenching story of friendship and love he shared in this fantastic book.
